Officers from Operation Weeting have arrested six former News of the World journalists in relation to the phone-hacking investigation.
News International has confirmed that two of those arrested are currently employed by The Sun.
In a statement the Met said it had "identified a further suspected conspiracy to intercept telephone voicemails" by a number of employees at the now defunct tabloid, which was shut down by News International in July 2012.
The suspected conspiracy is believed to have taken place primarily during 2005 to 2006, according to the Met, and is separate from the alleged conspiracy already being investigated by Operation Weeting in which numerous arrests have already been made.
Six people were arrested this morning on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept telephone communications contrary to the Criminal Law Act 1997. The Met said all were journalists or former journalists.
They are:
- A 46-year-old man ('Weeting Arrest A1') arrested in the London Borough of Wandsworth
- A 39-year-old man ('Weeting Arrest B1') arrested in the London Borough of Greenwich
- A 45-year-old man ('Weeting Arrest C1') arrested in the London Borough of Wandsworth;
- A 39-year-old woman ('Weeting Arrest D1') arrested in Cheshire
- A 33-year-old woman ('Weeting Arrest E1') arrested in the London Borough of Islington
- A 40-year-old woman ('Weeting Arrest F1') arrested in the London Borough of Lambeth
They are being interviewed at various police stations in London and Cheshire and searches are being carried out at a number of addresses.
The Met said: "In due course officers will be making contact with people they believe have been victims of the suspected voicemail interceptions.
"In the meantime if any individual believes they may be a victim and wishes to get in touch with Operation Weeting they should do so via the email link which will be posted on the MPS website www.met.police.uk later today."
