Senior journalists from The Independent among 50-strong editorial line up for i under Johnston Press

By Dominic Ponsford

A number of senior Independent journalists are included on the 50-strong new editorial team of i as it transfers over to Johnston Press ownership.

The Independent closed after 30 years on Saturday with around 100 out of 160 journalists losing their jobs. The remainder are believed to have either moved to The Independent website (which has a total staff of 75) or the i.

The size of the new editorial team is three times the size it was under the ownership of Evgeny Lebedev, when the dedicated editorial headcount was 17. The i did, however, share resources with The Independent.

Oliver Duff continues as editor off i, as does deputy editor Andy Webster.

Fran Yeoman is assistant editor (news), Hanna Tavner is assistant editor (iWeekend) and Siobhan Norton is assistant editor (production).

Independent and i features editor Rebecca Armstrong continues in the same role at i as does picture editor Sophie Batterby.

The business editor is a new hire, Elizabeth Anderson who joins from the Daily Telegraph where she was a business reporter.

Memphis Barker joins from Independent Voices, the comment section of The Independent website, as comment editor,

Journalists moving across from The Independent to i include the following:

  • Independent deputy arts editor Alice Jones is arts editor of i

  • Independent on Sunday arts editor Hugh Montgomery will be her deputy

  • Alasdair McKay is sports editor of i and was previously sports news editor of The Independent

  • Independent art director Tim Alden is moving over to the same job at i

  • Independent graphic artist Henrik Pettersson is graphics editor

  • Independent Italy correspondent Michael Day has been made foreign editor of i

  • Independent chief reporter Cahal Milmo continues in the same job for i

  • Independent environment energy editor Tom Bawden is science and environment correspondent for i

  • Independent North of England correspondent Dean Kirby joins i in the same role
    .
  • Independent arts and media correspondent Adam Sherwin moves over to i in the same role

  • Paul Gallagher moves over from The Independent to be health correspondent of i

  • Independent sports writer Kevin Garside has been named chief sports correspondent

  • Former Independent deputy political editor Nigel Morris is i political editor.

Duff said: “This is an exciting new chapter for i, and I’m delighted to continue as editor. We have a brilliantly talented team here and are thrilled to have the chance to take i forward in digital and in print.”

Johnston Press editor-in-chief Jeremy Clifford said: “The i’s new editorial team is full of experience and creativity, and we’re delighted to be welcoming these journalists into the Johnston Press fold. W

“We are confident they will continue to make the i the success it has been under the leadership of Oly. There is a huge opportunity in front of us to combine their expertise with that of the 900 journalists in Johnston Press and their knowledge across our portfolio to really provide our readers with effective and relevant content at a national level.”

The first edition of I under Johnston Press ownership will appear on 11 April after the £24m purchase of the title. The title is also soon launching in Northern Ireland.
