• Scottish Press Awards: The full list of nominations
The Scotsman and the Scottish Sun are leading the way in this year’s Scottish Press Awards, with 12 nominations each.
The shortlist for the annual awards was announced yesterday and includes more than 75 journalists, photographers and cartoonists.
The event, now in its 30th year, is organised by the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society, which said it had received 343 entries this year.
The Sunday Times received 10 nominations, followed by Scotsman sister title Scotland on Sunday on nine.
The Sun’s arch-rival, the Trinity Mirror-owned Daily Record, received eight mentions on the shortlist
As well as staff journalists, two freelances also feature in this year’s nominations..
Thomas Main, a freelance sports photographer, and Scott Clissold, a freelance cartoonist, are up for awards in their respective categories.
The Herald’s Lucy Adams is nominated for reporter of the year and her exclusive interview with Aisha Megrahi, the wife of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, is nominated for scoop of the year.
It was reported in December that journalists at Johnston Press in Edinburgh would be boycotting this year’s awards. The NUJ chapel at the Scotsman Group unanimously passed a motion agreeing not to enter in protest over plans to cut costs at the group.
But a Scottish Daily Newspaper Society spokeswoman told Press Gazette: “We have had over 340 entries this time, which is only 20 down on last year. I don’t think it will affect the night too much and hopefully we’ll have a great ceremony.”
The awards night will take place on 23 April in Glasgow.
