Michael Gove and The Times score UK exclusive with Donald Trump interview

By Dominic Ponsford

The Times secured a UK exclusive today as it published an interview with US president-elect Donald Trump.

Times columnist and former cabinet minister Michael Gove said he was invited to interview Trump along with Kal Diekman of German Daily Bild.
They spoke with Trump for an hour at Trump Tower in New York on and off the record.

A video of the interview was set to be broadcast by Sky News at 9.45am this morning. Times parent company News Corp owns 39 per cent of Sky. Content from the interview was also shared with Times sister title The Sun.

Trump revealed that he wanted to “move quickly” on a trade deal with the US, contradicting the view of President Barack Obama that the UK would be “at the back of the queue” if it voted to leave the European Union.

And it also spoke out about the unverified allegations made against him in a dossier compiled by a former MI6 agent.

He said: “That guy is somebody you should look at because whatever he made up about me is false…

Referring apparently to the allegation that he paid prostitutes to urinate on a Moscow hotel bed, he said: “If I did that in a hotel it would be the biggest thing. They’d have me on the front page of the New York Post.”

The story appears in today’s print edition (Monday) but was first broken online on Sunday evening.

The Times is publishing the full interview transcript online today and also hosting an online question and answer session with Gove.

Trump said he has no intention of curbing his use of Twitter, noting that he now has 46m followers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

He said: “I thought I’d do less of it but I’m covered so dishonestly by the press…that I can put out on Twitter…I can go bing bing bing..and they put it out as soon as I tweet it out – this morning on television, Fox..’Donald Trump, we have breaking news.”
