The Guardian this morning became the most expensive mainstream national daily newspaper – rising its price to 80p.
It follows the Times’ decision to raise its cover price to 70p last week. The Daily Telegraph now costs 70p as well as does the Independent.
The Financial Times, at £1.30, remains by far the most expensive national title.
The move may be part of a bid to offset a reduction in income from copy sales. The Guardian’s sale in August was 355,750, which was only marginally above the pre-Berliner relaunch sale of August 2005.
For the financial year to April, Guardian News and Media (The Guardian, Observer and Guardian Umlimited) made an operating loss before exceptional items of £15.9m.
This was down from a loss of £19.3 million in 2006, on an increase in turnover from £237.4m in 2006 to £245.7m.
