Former Independent on Sunday editor John Mullin joins Telegraph sports team in post-Henry Winter shake-up

By William Turvill

Former Independent on Sunday editor John Mullin has joined the Telegraph as head of sports news.

The newspaper group also announced it has taken on The Independent's football correspondent Sam Wallace today.

The moves come after the Telegraph's top sports writer, football correspondent Henry Winter, left the newspaper to join The Times.

Winter, who started at the Telegraph in 1994, is understood to be on gardening leave until starting at The Times in November.

Wallace has been named chief football writer, while deputy football correspondent Jason Burt has been promoted to chief football correspondent at the title.

Mullin, who after leaving The Independent on Sunday was made Scottish referendum editor at the BBC, starts on 31 August.

Telegraph Media Group head of sport Adam Sills said: “The Telegraph has the biggest standalone sport section in Britain and the most comprehensive coverage.

"We also boast the greatest team of commentators who offer unrivalled expertise and experience across the full range of sports.”
