The Daily Mail has overtaken The Sun as Britain’s most popular newspaper on a Saturday

By Darren Boyle

The Saturday edition of the Daily Mail has overtaken The Sun to become the biggest selling newspaper.

The Sun remains the nation’s most popular newspaper between Monday and Friday as well as on Sunday.

According to new Audit Bureau of Circulations figures released today, the Saturday edition of the Daily Mail sells on average 2,474,439 compared with 2,453,981.

On average The Sun shifts 2.9 million copies a day.

Roland Agambar, chief marketing officer of the Daily Mail said: “While we have out sold the Sun on Saturdays previously, this is the first time we have achieved better sales over the course month.

"The performance of both papers demonstrates the strength of the Mail brand, the success of our loyalty strategy and the advantage of continued editorial and commercial investment."

In the daily market, the i showed a year on year increase of 4.14 percent with 298,768 sales compared with a 15 percent drop at the Independent.

Both the Times and the Daily Telegraph reported a circulation decrease of slightly less than 3 percent.

All Sunday newspapers reported circulation drops with the Daily Star Sunday shedding almost 21 percent of its sales selling an average of 336,481.

The Financial Times also posted disappointing print sales figures with a further year-on-year decrease of 15 percent.
