Times Education Supplement and Times Higher Education are to get two new editors.
Gerard Kelly, current editor on THE, is to move to become editor of TES following the departure of Karen Dempsey, who is leaving for personal reasons, according to its owners TSL Education.
Deputy editor on THE, Ann Mroz, has been promoted to the editorship of the magazine, which was relaunched in January this year under the stewardship of Kelly. Mroz has been with the title for 14 years.
The titles have both been through a revamp after Rupert Murdoch sold them to newly formed independent publishing company TSL Education in 2006.
David Hillman, who has previously worked on overhauls of The Guardian and more recently, The Stage, redesigned both of the Times titles. TES remained in a part newspaper format while THE was repositioned as a weekly magazine.
Kelly, who has been in education journalism for 17 years, said he intended to carry on the debate about the future of education in the magazine.
He said: “TES has dominated the education agenda for almost 100 years. It covered the great soul-searching over the future of education in the 40s, instigated much of the discussion over comprehensives in the Fifties and did so again later in the century over issues such as the national curriculum, Ofsted and compulsory testing. I intend to carry on that tradition.”

Gerard is creative, full of ideas and has been an expert on the education system for more than a decade. I am confident that he will be an excellent editor of TES and will put his undoubted talents to good use as TES moves forward rapidly to serve the country’s 500,000 teachers.

“Ann is already a highly respected figure in the Higher Education world and I am quite sure she will continue to push forward the THE as it continues to build on the successful retlaunch and its special place in the world of academe.”
THE had a circulation of 22,194 in 2006, according to its latest ABC figures, while TES posted a circulation of 69,153 in the first six months of 2007.
