Magazine Design & Journalism Awards: the shortlist

By Press Gazette

A record number of entries has been received for this year’s Press Gazette Magazine Design and Journalism Awards.

Some 436 entries have now been whittled down to shortlists for each category, and the winners will be announced by comedian Daisy Donovan at Floridita Restaurant in London, on 18 October.

Designer Michael Crozier, on the design awards judging panel, said: ‘The standard was very high, especially from the contract publishers. What was particularly good to see was a move back to having good illustration and spending some money on having good photographs as well.

‘In addition, a lot of the young designers seem to be doing really good things with typography.”

Publishing consultant Richard Davies, in charge of shortlisting the awards’ journalism categories, said: ‘There are some big names here from some big publishing houses – it took me far longer than I expected to draw up the shortlist, partly because so many of the pieces I just wanted to take my time to read.

‘Cutting them down to shortlists has been particularly difficult – in the feature writer and columnist categories particularly, the shortlists could have been twice as long.”
