Mag ABCs: Private Eye is top current affairs title, sales boosts for New Statesman and MoneyWeek

By Dominic Ponsford

Private Eye was the best-selling current affairs magazine in the UK in the second half of 2013, according to ABC.

The fortnightly satirical title had an average sale of 224,162 – fractionally down by 0.3 per cent year on year.

The New Statesman was one of the fastest growing current affairs titles, up by 14.4 per cent year on year to an average weekly sale of 28,495 a week. Its biggest sellers were the centenary edition and a special edition guest edited by Russell Brand.

MoneyWeek also did particularly well, increasing its almost entirely paid-for sale by 22.4 per cent year on year to 56,790.

Private Eye editor Ian Hislop said: “Thatcher’s death, Prince George’s birth, Rebekah Brooks’ trial – we’ve done well in a quiet year…”

Private Eye managing director Sheila Molnar said: “The sales figures speak for themselves – so no spin from me, quite simply people like the magazine and want to buy it.”
