Estates Gazette celebrates 150 years

By Press Gazette

Estates Gazette celebrated its 150th anniversary this week under the stewardship of an editor who has overseen two b2b magazines reaching that milestone .

Estates Gazette editor Peter Bill was also at the helm of Building magazine when it turned 150 in 1992.

Bill has been editor of Reed Business Information title, Estates Gazette, since 1997. He previously edited Building from 1985 – 1996.

Estates Gazette has run a series of commemorative pieces throughout May that took six months to pull together, according to Bill. A 170-page supplement sent out to the magazine’s subscribers included archive material selected from more than 7,000 back issues.

A piece looks back at the ups and downs of the property cycle. Of the current economic turmoil, Bill said there has been no effect on editorial and that the magazine was continuing to recruit to add to its 50 plus journalists.

He said he expected both recruitment and commercial advertising to slow but ‘not badly”.

Henry Allnutt, a conservationist and author, first published Estates Gazette on 1 May 1858. Reed Business Information bought the magazine for £59.4 million in 1990. The 160-strong Estates Gazette Group, which is based in Procter Street in Holborn, now has an annual turnover of £30m and makes a seven-figure profit.

RBI, which also includes New Scientist and Farmers’ Weekly, has been put up for sale by its parent company Reed Elsevier this year. Reed is looking to sell the portfolio as a whole and engaging a number of banks to loan money to a potential buyer to help finance the sale, rather than face a sale of parts.
