Guardian journalists leave to join Vice UK as editor and managing editor

By Dominic Ponsford

Two Guardian journalists have left the title to join Vice UK as editor-in-chief and managing editor.

Rebecca Nicholson leaves The Guardian after four years to edit Vice. She is currently live features editor and has previously been TV and Radio editor.

In her new job she will oversee all UK output on Vice.com. Jenny Stevens joins as managing editor. She is currently commissioning editor for culture at The Guardian.

The moves are the latest in a series of Guardian to staffers to leave the title for newer media brands.

Last month Guardian head of news Stuart Millar left the title to join Buzzfeed. He followed former Guardian deputy editor Janine Gibson and the paper’s special projects editor James Ball in moving to Buzzfeed.

Vice global head of content Alex Miller said: “In a world where the left and right wing of British media are converging in a puddle of clickbait, Vice UK needs more than ever to maintain its originality and its voice. Rebecca is the person to help us do that.

“Only someone with her editorial vision and charisma can ensure that while we continue to grow dramatically, we never stumble into the pitfalls of the mainstream. I can't wait to start working with her.”

Nicholson said: “After learning a huge amount during my time at the Guardian, I'm incredibly excited to be joining Vice UK and getting involved with its unique and frank approach to such a variety of stories.

“Vice UK has changed a lot over the last few years and I can't wait to work with its outstanding team of young journalists on shaping the next incarnation. With more original reporting, a louder voice in British media and a focus on bringing even more diversity to its broad range of writers, we'll ensure that the sharpest, biggest, and best stories are being told as only Vice.
