By Dominic Ponsford

Express Newspapers says it is recruiting 40 digital editorial staff bringing its website headcount to over 100.

Last month Express.co.uk was the UK's fastest growing national newspaper website, up 59 per cent year on year to 1.4m unique browsers per day.

The UK's biggest national newspaper website, Mail Online, is believed to have more than 400 editorial staff. The Independent website is set to have a staff of around 75 when it goes digital-only next month.

The digital expansion at Express Newspapers comes against a backdrop of successive waves of redundancies on the print editorial team and an eight-year pay freeze.
