Buzzfeed to expand UK editorial team by more than a quarter and take on regional reporters

By William Turvill

Buzzfeed is expanding the size of its editorial team in the UK by more than a quarter.

The website is advertising for 14 new positions today, including four "regional beat reporter" positions.

Founded in the United States in 2006, Buzzfeed was launched in the UK in March 2013 with three editorial staff. This number has now grown to around 50.

The latest round of recruitment will bring Buzzfeed's UK editorial staff to around 65, with 40 per cent of those estimated to work in news.

The expansion comes after Buzzfeed UK announced this summer the recruitment of The Guardian's Janine Gibson as editor-in-chief.

Since this announcement, Buzzfeed has also taken on The Guardian's Stuart Millar as head of news and James Ball as special correspondent.

In addition, Buzzfeed's investigations unit includes former Sunday Times Insight journalist Heidi Blake and Michael Gillard, who was named Journalist of the Year at the 2013 British Journalism Awards.

The regional reporting jobs are for the north of England, Scotland and Wales. The advert says: "The reporters must be deeply embedded in their areas with a strong understanding of the different communities who live there, and a passion for reporting on them for a national and international audience."

In addition to regional reporters, Buzzfeed is also advertising for a business editor and weekend editor.
