Rajar is to expand its research into podcast listening habits, following on from its initiative to include questions about podcasts in its quarterly survey of radio listening.
The first survey, published last week, found that nearly two million adults in Britain listen to radio programmes downloaded from the internet.
From next year, listeners who complete Rajar diaries will be asked to indicate what platform they used to listen to programmes, according to the Radiocentre's head of research, Alison Winter.
Rajar data has found that 25.8 per cent of British adults own an MP3 player, of whom 14.8 per cent use the device to listen to podcasts of radio programmes. This translates into approximately 1.9m listeners.
The survey specifically asked whether respondents used portable MP3 players to listen to radio programme podcasts. It therefore does not include podcasts other than those produced by radio stations, and does not take into account users who listen to podcasts directly on their computers.
