‘Top snapper and top bloke’ football photographer Martyn Harrison has died

Freelance sports photographer Martyn Harrison, who was official club photographer for Sheffield United, has died of cancer aged 60.

Senior communications officer at Sheffield United Kevin Cookson said: "Martyn’s abilities as a photographer were only matched by his standing as a gentleman. He was a top ‘snapper’ and a top bloke and he will be missed tremendously at Bramall Lane. Martyn served the club he loved with distinction for many years and everyone at the club loved him.

"He regularly went above and beyond the call of duty, providing photographic coverage from all aspects of the club, as well as travelling the length and breadth of the country, providing quality pictures from first team games.

"A measure of how much he loved the club is that he has dedicated his whole library, over 30 years worth of pictures, to the Blades. On a personal level, he was more than a colleague, he was a dear friend and United games will not be the same without him.”

Jim Phipps, the co-chair of Sheffield United, said on Twitter: “RIP Martyn Harrison, the eyes of Sheffield United for so very many years. We will miss you, Baldy.”

Harrison also spent time working for Sunderland and Middlesbrough football clubs.
