New agency Reuters has beefed up its comment team by appointing founder deputy editor of Breaking Views Jonathan Ford to the new job of commentary editor.
It is the latest move in the London-based agency’s recent policy of broadening out its service to be about more than just breaking news.
Reuters introduced columns in 2007 and in recent years the agency has also encouraged correspondents to write more first-person colour pieces.
Columns are intended, the agency says, to provide context, expertise and cover business topics such as commodities and energy, macroeconomics, technology, European policy, emerging markets and mergers and acquisitions.
From 2000 to 2007, Ford was a founder and deputy editor of Breakingviews.com, the financial commentary website.
Before that, he was a journalist on the Financial Times, where he was a member of the Lex column, and a financial reporter on the Evening Standard. Before becoming a journalist, Ford was an investment banker.
