Editorial reshuffle at Press Gazette

By Press Gazette

Press Gazette has had an editorial reshuffle which sees news editor Freddy Mayhew promoted to editor.

Editor Dominic Ponsford has moved to editor-in-chief with a more strategic role and a focus on Press Gazette’s growing portfolio of events: the British Journalism Awards, the Specialist Media Awards and the Digital Journalism Summit.

Ponsford also has a wider role now, working across the publishing group.

In other changes, Charlotte Tobitt has joined Press Gazette as chief reporter. Charlotte is a former content editor of getsurrey.co.uk and was awarded NCTJ trainee journalist of the year in 2016.

In addition, Press Gazette now has a graduate trainee working on a rotation as part of a group-wide training programme meaning the title is now better resourced than it has been for a number of years.

Ponsford said: “This promotion for Freddy is well-deserved recognition for his hard work and commitment to the Press Gazette cause.”

Mayhew is now in charge of day to day editorial content on the site and its daily email edition and is the best point of contact for pitches and tip-offs.

Ponsford was appointed editor of Press Gazette in December 2006. Since then the title has won numerous awards including Specialist Website of the Year at the 2015 Online Media Awards and the Chairman’s Award at the 2011 Online Media Awards.

Its 2015 Save Our Sources campaign secured a change in the law to stop the police spying on journalists’ telecoms records without the consent of a judge and was a finalist in the Paul Foot Awards of that year.

The site came close to closure in 2009 but was saved at the 11th hour when it was bought by Mike Danson’s Progressive Media Group (it is still part of the same group of companies).

Today Press Gazette is on a secure financial footing and is growing as a business.
