Wikileaks was left in a fight to stay on the internet today after the US company which provided its technical hosting withdrew its support for the site.
EveryDNS.net said it had to withdraw its support for Wikileaks to protect its other customers being affected by a wave of cyber attacks from hackers.
The provider said the attacks threatened its infrastructure and it had been forced to drop Wikileaks.org to protect the rest of its network.
“Wikileaks.org has become the target of multiple distributed denial of service attacks. These attacks have, and future attacks would, threaten the stability of the EveryDNS.net infrastructure,” it said in a statement.
That move forced Wikileaks off the internet for a period of time this morning.
The whistleblowing site was forced to relocate its website to a Swiss domain name after it lost its .org suffix, the organisation revealed on its Twitter feed later.
Earlier this week, Amazon threw Wikileaks off its servers and denied that government inquiries prompted its removal.
