The Washington Post is widening access to its digital content by offering free access to the subscribers of other newspapers.
The publisher, now run by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, will partner with US local and regional newspapers such as the Dallas Morning News to offer existing paying subscribers access to the Washington Post on top.
The Financial Times reports that the project will start in May and could be extended to subscribers of services other than newspapers – such as Amazon Prime or Spotify.
The development marks a substantial strategy shift for the Washington Post, which plans to broaden its digital footprint nationally and internationally after previously retrenching to focus on the local Washington market. No cash changes hands between the Washington Post and its partners. In exchange for offering up its content, the Washington Post is hoping for national exposure and brand promotion.
