Wall Street Journal to charge for mobile content

The Wall Street Journal confirmed today it will begin to charge for its mobile phone content next month.

News Corporation chief, Rupert Murdoch, announced earlier this week, the separate subscription charge for iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry users will begin from 24 October.

The new subscription model comes at a time when, according to Murdoch, “news is more valuable than it has ever been”.

Mobile-only subscriptions will be $2 (Around £1.20) per week, current print or online WSJ subscribers will be charged $1and subscribers to both the print and online editions of the publication will receive free access to the mobile content.

Managing editor of the Wall Street Journal, Robert Thomson, said: “There is much value in being constantly and fully briefed, and our WSJ Mobile Reader offers that important service.”

New features will be added to the WSJ Mobile Reader including stock tracking, personalisation technology, save and share functions and enhanced market data.

Current users of the WSJ Mobile Reader will receive messages next week indicating they will soon need to update their subscriptions.
