Cumbrian weekly newspaper, The Lakeland Echo, is to stop producing a printed edition after 30 years – however it will continue covering the north Lancashire and Lake District areas online.
Named after a paper which existed in Ambleside at the turn of the last century, The Echo made national headlines when it was launched in July 1979 with a cover price of just 6p.
Founder Andrew Wilson told the paper: “I regard 30 years as an achievement for a local paper when hundreds of local papers around the country have come and gone in a much shorter time.
“In fact, on my Christmas cards, I was reminding some of the early workers with whom I am still in touch that the Echo chalked up its thirtieth anniversary this year and that was something worth celebrating.”
No redundancies are expected as a result of the change to online-only publication as the Echo has a shared editorial team with sister titles The Visitor and Lancaster and Morecambe Reporter.
