ITN to launch archive project next month

ITN Source will showcase the completion of its two year restoration project to digitise the ITN archive next month.

ITN said the project makes ITN the UK’s first fully digital major TV news archive. It will be unveiled at the Footage Marketplace – a major exhibition of the footage industry – at BAFTA, Piccadilly, on 1 May.

The digitising of the ITN archive means clients can search, preview and download ITN content dating back to 1955 via the ITN Source website.

The company said was licensing a disproportionate amount of digital versus non-digital material.

The digitisation project has thrown up rare footage such as a newly-wed Marilyn Monroe arriving at a London airport with Arthur Miller in 1956 to film ‘The Prince and the Showgirl.’

It also meant that footage including Nelson Mandela’s first interview and the fall of Saigon are permanently digitally preserved.

Project Digital Archive has been nominated for a FOCUL Award (Federation of Commercial Audio Visual Libraries) for ITN’s contribution to national heritage.

Newly digitised content can be viewed via www.ITNSource.com.
