Is Johnston Press set for digital re-launch?

Johnston Press chief executive Tim Bowdler has denied a report that the regional newspaper group’s titles could be headed for a digital makeover.

The Times’s Mediapolis column reports that JP is concerned its websites are falling behind that of rivals Trinity Mirror and Daily Mail and General Trust, who own Northcliffe Media.

But speaking to PaidContent.co.uk, Bowdler described the report as “completely fallacious” and “hopelessly wrong”.

In JP’s interim report last summer, Bowdler said the company was making “execellent” progress with its 338 local websites which receive more than 7.9 unique users per month. The group rolled out its “newsroom of the future” plan earlier than expected and even its smaller weekly titles are now competing online with video and breaking news.
