Two news agency journalists were killed yesterday photographing attempts to dismantle an exploded Israeli bomb in Gaza (pictured abobe: Reuters) according to the International Federation of Journalists.
The IFJ has urged all journalists who continue to report in Gaza to remain vigilant at all times, even during periods of ceasefire.
According to the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate, Italian photographer Kamili Simon, 37, who worked for Associated Press, and Palestinian photographer Ali Abuafash, 38, who worked for AFP, were killed yesterday, Wednesday 13 August, in Beit Lahya, north of the Gaza Strip.
The IFJ said they were taking photos of local technicians as they tried to dismantle the bomb when it exploded. Another Palestinian photographer, Hatem Musa, 37, who also works for Associated Press, was said to have been seriously injured in the incident.
IFJ president Jim Boumella said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of these two journalists and we send our deepest condolences to their families and colleagues.
“Their deaths clearly show that even during times of ceasefire potential dangers remain in Gaza. Journalists covering the region must remain alert at all times and take every precaution to stay safe, while media owners must be mindful of their journalists’ well-being and ensure that they are supported and protected.”
