The BBC has closed down a website promoting sponsorship opportunities, after the Times revealed rival broadcasters were planning to lodge a formal complaint about it.
BBCEventsSponsorship.com offered packages for events such as Children in Need and Sports Personality of the Year, promising “contractual verbal and visual credits on BBC One”.
The BBC’s editorial guidelines state: “In some circumstances it may be acceptable to supplement the cost of mounting a free-standing BBC event with sponsorship from a suitable outside body.”
