BBC Magazines launches first monthly magazine iPad app

Focus iPad appBBC Magazines has introduced the first iPad app for one of its monthly magazines with the launch of a digital version of its science and technology magazine BBC Focus.

The Focus app launches with the December issue of Focus at a cost of £3.49 – however, it will be free to download for print subscribers.

According to the BBC, each page has been designed on a dual viewing mode so content can be viewed in both portrait and landscape orientation.

Interactive features include an animated cover, integrated video and audio, and 360-degree photography that allows users to see the very latest gadgets and consumer technology from all angles, the producers said.

Other features include interactive info-graphics, geo-tagged information and an in-app browser to aid navigation.

Peter Phippen, managing director of BBC Magazines, said: ‘I am delighted that BBC Magazines’ first fully-interactive magazine app is for Focus, a title dedicated to making science accessible to all.

‘This is a very exciting development for BBC Magazines as it moves into the next phase of digital publishing and I will be announcing more digital titles this financial year.”

The app was created by in-house editorial and art teams but built by technology firm Mobile IQ.
