BBC Knowledge magazine to launch in Asia

BBC Worldwide is to further extend the international reach of its UK magazines by launching history, nature and science title, Knowledge, in Asia after forging a publishing deal with Singapore-based Regent Media.

From September 80,000 copies of the new magazine will be distributed across Singapore and Malaysia with Ben Poon editing the local edition.

The BBC already licences Knowledge in Brazil and the USA.

The brand has had a presence in Singapore for two years through the Knowledge Channel, which started on SingTel Mio TV then switched to the StarHub TV network on 1 August.

Expansion to Asia has long been a goal for the BBC, with the Times of India Group in 2004 agreeing a joint venture called Worldwide Media (WWM) to publish and market the BBC’s magazines.

One of WWM’s major titles is the world’s largest-selling car magazine, the ever growing Top Gear, with 1.5 million readers in areas including China, the Middle East, Russia and Singapore in addition to various European countries.
