BAE seeks to improve standing after Guardian investigation

By Patrick

British defence contractor BAE Systems is investing in its first advertising campaign in five years, after a damaging Serious Fraud Office investigation and a series of stories from The Guardian’s investigations team.

Reporters David Leigh and Rob Evans spent more than three years investigating BAE and followed a paper trail around the world to establish that the firm had paid millions of pounds in kickbacks to the Saudi Arabian government in return for a lucrative arms deal.

They famously found that the company had paid £1m to Saudi Prince Bandar.

The SFO enquiry was ended in December 2006 after the then attorney general Lord Goldsmith said the probe would harm Britain’s national interests.
