Murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has been shortlisted for this year’s Sakharov Award for freedom of thought.
The winner of the human rights prize, awarded by the European Parliament, will be announced on 25 October – just over a year after Politkovskaya was shot dead outside her Moscow apartment.
The reporter, who worked for the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, established her reputation on the back of controversial reports about human rights abuses by Russian troops in Chechnya. Her body was found in the lift in the building where she lived.
The prize, named after Soviet Dissisdent and Noel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, has been awarded anually since 1988 to individuals or organisations who have made an important contribution to the fight for human rights or democracy.

Candidates for the €50,000 prize were selected by MEPs earlier this month. Politkovskaya was nominated by Joseph Daul, a French MEP, on behalf of the European People’s Party and the European Democracts.
