Member of armed forces arrested in Elveden probe

By Press Gazette

A serving member of the armed forces and his wife were arrested today by detectives investigating allegations of inappropriate payments to public officials by journalists.

Scotland Yard said the arrests were the result of information provided by News Corporation's management standards committee, which was set up in the wake of the phone hacking scandal.

The woman, 32, was arrested at her home in Chertsey, Surrey, at 6am. Her husband, 42, was detained at an address in nearby Camberley half an hour later.

Scotland Yard said the man was arrested on suspicion of corruption contrary to the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906, misconduct in a public office and suspicion of conspiracy to commit both offences.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit corruption and suspicion of conspiracy to cause misconduct in a public office.

They were being interviewed at a police station in Surrey.

Today's arrests take to 46 the number of suspects questioned as part of Operation Elveden, which is running in conjunction with Operation Weeting, Scotland Yard's inquiry into phone-hacking.

On Tuesday a prison officer was held by Operation Elveden detectives at his home in Northampton on suspicion of conspiracy to corrupt and misconduct in a public office.

Another man, 28, was arrested on the same day under Operation Tuleta, which is looking at computer hacking, the alleged illegal accessing of stolen mobile phones and other privacy breaches.
