Hacking trial over: Jury unable to reach verdict on claim Coulson and Goodman paid police for royal phone books

The hacking trial jury has said it cannot reach a verdict on the final two charges against Andy Coulson and Clive Goodman.

This means that the jury will be discharged and a decision is expected on Monday as to whether there should be a re-trial.

Coulson has already been convicted of conspiracy to hack phones.

It was alleged that Coulson and former royal editor of the News of the World Clive Goodman conspired to commit misconduct in a public office between August 2002 and January 2003 and between 31 January and 3 June 2005. Specifically, it was alleged that the paid police officers for royal telephone directories.

The hacking trial judge considered halting proceedings today following criticism by former Number 10 spin doctor Andy Coulson's lawyer of the Prime Minister's "ill-advised and premature intervention" in case, it can now be reported.
