Officers from Operation Elveden arrested two people in the Rotherham area of South Yorkshire this morning – bringing the total number of arrests in the investigation to 52.
Officers from Elveden, the Met investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police and public officials, arrested a 34-year-old woman, a former Ministry of Defence employee, on suspicion of misconduct in a public office (contrary to common law) and suspected corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.
A 31-year-old-man, a serving member of the armed forces, was arrested at the same address on suspicion of aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office (contrary to common law) and suspected money laundering offences under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
The arrests took place at approximately 6am and the pair are currently being interviewed at a South Yorkshire police station.
The Met said that today's operation was the result of information provided to police by News Corporation's Management and Standards Committee. It relates to suspected payments to public officials and is not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately.
