Press Gazette returns to Fleet Street

By Dominic Ponsford1

Some 500 years after Winkyn de Worde set up his first printing press on Fleet Street – and 44 years after Press Gazette was founded on the same London thoroughfare – the magazine and website for all journalists is returning to the spiritual home of the press.

Press Gazette moves this weekend to Carmelite Street, a stone’s throw from Fleet Street and in the heart of a district which was once packed with journalists and which nightly throbbed to the sound of printing presses.

We will be joining sister title New Statesman in smart newly-refurbished offices along with a stable of other titles published by our owners Progressive Media Group which include Blueprint, FX, Cranes Today, The Wealth Collection and World Cruise Industry Review.

While few journalists may now be based in and around Fleet Street (I think those working at the London office of DC Thomson’s Sunday Post are among the last) it remains a great place for a news organisation to be based.

In the heart of London we will be a stone’s throw from the Old Bailey and (more importantly for Press Gazette) the High Court – and in easy reach of famous journalists’ watering holes such as the Punch Tavern, Old Bell, Tipperary and Cheshire Cheese.

And if we need to call on help from God – the journalists’ church of St Brides is also nearby.

Press Gazette’s new address is: 7 Carmelite Street.

Deliveries should be sent to: John Carpenter House, John Carpenter Street, EC4Y 0AN (which is the rear of the same building).

The new editorial contact numbers are:

  • Editor, Dominic Ponsford: 0207 936 6432
  • News editor, Oliver Luft: 0207 936 6433
  • Associate editor (prodoction), Pamela Horne: 0207 936 6435.

IMPORTANT!

Post sent to our former address in Old Street is not being forwarded on and neither are the old Wilmington telephone numbers. Post and phone calls to Press Gazette’s current Paddington address will forward on for a limited period.
