Press Gazette magazine: Winning back trust, the inside story of NoW’s demise, Bob Woodward on finding a story…

By Dominic Ponsford1

After an amazing two weeks that have changed UK journalism forever – Press Gazette magazine takes stock of the fallout from the phone-hacking scandal.

We have asked every national newspaper publisher and editor what action they think needs to be taken for the journalism industry to regain public confidence.

Those speaking out include Independent editor Chris Blackhurst – who believes that a reformed PCC should have the power to ban and fine reporters and editors, like the General Medical Council or the Law Society.

We also hear the untold inside story of the last days of the News of the World – by the journalists who were there.
It includes this from former sub-editor for the paper Helen Moss: “It’s not just a job I lost but a way of life. While most people were spending their Friday and Saturday nights with friends and family I was at work with colleagues. It feels like a bereavement.”

While the alleged targeting of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s phone prompted the phone-hacking scandal to explode. It should be remembered that subterfuge by Mirror journalist David Collins helped prove that Levi Bellfield was guilty of the Surrey schoolgirl’s murder. He gives us the inside story of that scoop:
“I was basically using subterfuge the whole way through. It was the only way I could do it, if I had said what I was really doing there’s not way I would have got near him.”

In How I Did It, the Hull Daily Mail’s Nicky Harley explains how she used old-fashioned journalism techniques to help convict a rapist 25 years after he committed the crime.

In The Big Interview  we speak to journalist Tom Rachman, who has turned the story of the death of a newspaper into an international best-seller.

In The Knowledge Bob Woodward provides his tips on how to get a story.

And in the Exit Interview, we speak to former News of the World sports editor Paul McCarthy.

Press Gazette is only available to subscribers. That subscription now includes digital access to more than 200 back-copies of the magazine dating back to 2005.
