The November edition of Press Gazette has now gone to press and it’s a corker, even if I do say so myself.
I’m afraid that in these straitened times the only way to read its 64 pages of insight, analysis, tips and in-depth features about the ever-changing world of journalism is to take out a subscription.
The current subs offer is £90 a year (plus a 2gb USB stick) full rate.
And £40 a year for students (state the institution and year you are studying).
To subscribe call 01858 438872.
Here’s a taster of the November edition:
Geordie Greig:
Interview with the Evening Standard editor as the paper stands on the cusp of a remarkable renaissance.
He says: “As the media faces its worst economic circumstances for 100 years, only the bold will survive.”
What happens when editing goes bad:
Birmingham Post and Mail editors Steve Dyson and Mark Reeves are just the latest in a series of high profile regional press editors to depart the scene. We track down former regional press stalwarts Mike Lowe, Anita Syvret, Mike Glover (pictured below), Nick Carter, David Gledhill, Neil Fowler and Robin Fletcher to find whether there is life after editing.
Sunday newspaper editor Top Trumps
The latest instalment in our collectors’ cards – the fun game for the whole newsroom.
Young guns:
Profile interviews with up and coming magazine editors: Ben Duckworth from Total Politics, Nichola Browne from Kerrang (pictured), Chantelle Horton at More and Sam Delaney from Heat.
Daily Express editor Peter Hill:
He explains why the Express is more female-friendly than the Mail and reveals why it has to cut its editorial staff.
The rise of the super-injunction
What they are – and what to do if you get hit with one.
In comment:
Alan Rusbridger on the future of news and new columnist Alex Thomson from Channel 4 News on how to save regional broadcast news outside the BBC.
In Knowledge:
Peter Sands on how to revampt your leisure supplement; why sub-editing is on not such a dying art when it comes to freelancing; a guide to the best high-end cameras; how Panorama’s Raphael Rowe helped secure the release of Barry George; Kevin Marsh on Training; a masterclass on broadcasting for writers and what libel law reforms mean for journalists.
There’s also a Reporter’s Guide to Renewable energy ahead of the Copenhagen climate change conference.
Designer Simon Esterson talks us through the high points of his career.
There’s a guide to search engine optimisation for journalists, an exit interview with Paul Horrocks from the Manchester Evening News and a new Job Spy section in which we detail 20 of the best job vacancies now around for journalists.
And don’t forget popular regulars such as Grey Cardigan, David Banks and Axegrinder (who this month has tracked down a feature-writer turned artist who can’t seem to sell her portraits of Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre).
