Out-of-town exodus hits a Brum note

Journlaists on the Birmingham Mail, Post and Sunday Mercury are the latest to make the move from an office actually based in the place they cover to an out-of-town industrial estate.

They will have consoled themselves over the lack of real people walking into the office with stories to tell them with the fact that there is at least ample parking at the former tyre factory Fort Dunlop, five miles outside central Birmingham, to which they are moving later this year.

Apparently, however, assurances on parking at the site have evaporated and journalists are now being told that only the few editorial staff with company cars would have guaranteed places.

With little public transport to the site, the company is expected to run a shuttle bus for journos. Negotiations are understood to be ongoing between management and the NUJ.
