Since Will Lewis, the Telegraph’s editor-in-chief, lured one of his friends, Adrian Michaels, away from the FT to become head of the newly created foreign operations department, there has been no role for Mike Smith, who ran the foreign desk, according to my moles, very successfully.
Says one: ‘He was part of the new revolution at the Telegraph, so it’s very surprising that someone else has been given his job.”
Michaels hasn’t moved into his new slot at the Telegraph yet, so Smith is keeping his chair warm for him in the meantime.
What the paper offers Smith is still undecided – let’s hope it’s something he likes.
My mole says he was offered one job ‘that meant he had to start work at 6am, and he turned that down!’Who can blame him?
