Vice, Yahoo News, Daily Mail and others offer daily news updates through Snapchat social media app

By Emilio Casalicchio

Organisations such as Vice, National Geographic and The Daily Mail are offering content through social media app, Snapchat.

Snapchat, through which 100 million active users can share content that expires after up to 10 seconds, has launched a new “Discover” feature.

Discover allows users to view daily stories compiled by artists, publishers, and Snapchat’s own editorial staff.

According to a blog post from Snapchat, these stories will feature “full screen photos and videos, awesome long form layouts, and gorgeous advertising".

On mobile devices, swiping left twice from the Snapchat home page will reveal the discover platform. Here users can choose a content provider from the range of partnered companies (see picture above).

Once selected, the user is taken to that provider's "daily edition", swiping left to view the stories on offer and swiping upwards to select each story and reveal more detail.

Snapchat stresses that Discover is not social media,  instead allowing publishers to dictate what is “important”.

Companies already signed up to produce media for Discover are National Geographic, Vice, Yahoo News, People, Daily Mail, Cosmopolitan, CNN, and ESPN.

As an example, Vice offers a daily edition through Discover, which  – according to the company – will be a: “full screen mobile experience of Vice’s best news and entertainment coverage from around the globe.”

Each daily edition on Discover will expire after 24 hours because, reads Snapchat’s blog post: “what’s news today is history tomorrow.”
