Paul Mason has moved back to his old Newsnight beat and has been named Channel 4 News economics editor.
He replaces Faisal Islam who replacing Adam Boulton as Sky News political editor.
Channel 4 News editor Ben de Pear said: "Paul is a first-class journalist, a hugely respected broadcaster and an authoritative voice in the world of economics.
“His informed journalism on the state of the economy will combine intelligence with engaging story-telling.”
Mason joined Channel 4 from Newsnight in August 2013 as culture and digital editor.
He said: "I've enjoyed reporting in a role where the agenda ranged from Greek fascism to Morrissey's autobiography.
“With the election coming, with the UK in the middle of a housing bubble and with global economists nervous about the geopolitical situation, I'm delighted to be doing the job of economics editor in this multi-award-winning team."
