Sun deputy political editor Graeme Wilson to become Cameron press secretary

By Press Gazette

The Sun’s deputy political editor Graeme Wilson is leaving the paper to become Number 10 press secretary.

Prime Minister David Cameron has previously been criticised for his closeness to News International (now News UK). Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson resigned as Downing Street director of communications as a result of the phone-hacking scandal in 2011.

Wilson will replace current press secretary Susie Squire and report in to Coulson’s replacement as director of communications, former BBC journalist Craig Oliver.

The Spectator described Wilson as “one of the most respected political journalists in Fleet Street” and said his appointment “will boost relations between Number 10 and the political print press”.

Wilson has been deputy political editor of The Sun since 2007.
