Tindle launches new London paid-for weekly with more titles expected to follow

By William Turvill

Sir Ray Tindle’s newspaper group has launched a new paid-for weekly newspaper in London.

The Greenwich Town Mercury has become part of the Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley Mercury series. More new titles are expected to join the stable soon.

The news comes days after the group announced it was buying the Petersfield Post from Johnston Press, and a year after the South London Press launched seven new titles.

Coming in the Mercury’s 180th year, the Tindle Group of Newspapers said more launches are likely to follow.

Managing director Peter Edwards said: “While these are challenging times for newspapers generally, our experience is that the more local we can be, the closer to our communities we can get, then the more our readers and advertisers like it and the more successful we are.”
