Barking and Dagenham Council has announced the closure of its fortnightly newspaper The News in order to save money.
This is despite the fact that the title, launched four years ago, was expected to save the council £250,000 a year on local advertising it would have otherwise placed with the Barking and Dagenham Post – the Newspaper Society reports.
Such council-run newspapers have been condemned as propaganda vehicles which undermine the democratic oversight provided by commercially-run local newspapers.
