Press Gazette feature spawns book from former Take a Break editor John Dale

By Dominic wireposts

Former Take a Break editor John Dale’s two-part feature for Press Gazette – A Day in the Life of British Journalism – has now been published as an e-book.

Launched today on Kindle, 24 Hours in Journalism runs to 85,000 words and is being sold at the introductory price of £2.99.

Writing on his blog, Dale describes the book as  “a global journey into love, war, fame, bombings, shame, sex, football and Hollywood – in other words, an average news day”.

It includes contributions from editors, reporters, war correspondents, feature writers, columnists, agony aunts, fashion gurus, showbiz writers, broadcasters, paparazzi, trainees, unemployed hacks and billionaire moguls.

Press Gazette and John Dale asked journalists to tell us about their day on February 6 this year so that we could tell the story of one news cycle. The result was two compelling features, but Dale had much more material than could be used in the magazine.

As an e-book it looks well worth a read. Journalism students could see it as the ultimate piece work experience – providing a chance to shadow a huge variety of journalists for one day.

It’s also a good reminder of what a superbly varied and interesting job journalism is. Highly recommended.
