The Financial Times today launched a new free app for smartphones and tablet computers which includes live updates and which is based on technology which bypasses Apple.
The app will be free to download and operates within the FT’s existing metered online charging model – which means readers will get ten articles a month for free.
Because it is built using the HTML5 programming language the new app will not be confined to iPhones and iPads – and it also bypasses the Apple online store. It is available to download direct from the FT.
The app will allow readers to access FT content offline – but it will also be automatically updated throughout the day when connected to the internet.
According to the The FT the app has initially been optimised for the iPad and iPhone but it will also be adapted across other tablet devices and for phones using the Android operating system.

According to the FT its existing free tablet and mobile phone apps have so far attracted more than one million downloads. The FT has some 224,00 paying digital subscribers.
