The Independent has launched a free mobile application to allow smartphone users to access its content.
The app, which will allow access across iPhones, Android phones and Blackberry devices, is an upgrade from The Independent’s previous app.
The previous app was solely designed for the iPhone and attracted between 50,000 and 100,000 users per month, The Independent said.
The new app will feature stories on news, sport, opinion, arts & entertainment, life & style, business, and travel. Readers will also be able to share content through email as well as social media sites Facebook and Twitter.
The Independent’s new sister paper, i, launched a paid-for iPad app in November to drive uptake in subscriptions.
Subscribers to the i’s iPad app are charged £1.79 for ten issues. For access to 20 copies, subscribers will pay 25 per cent less than the cost of the print product.
