A local newspaper journalist who lives in Bridgend has added to the criticism of how the national press covered a series of suicides among young people.
“The finger of blame increasingly points to the blanket coverage, particularly in the national press,” the journalist writes on the Guardian’s Comment is Free blog.
Local government officials and parents of some of the dead teenagers have this week accused the press of glamourising suicide – and possibly prompting copycat attempts.
“In the wake of four mad weeks, journalists should be examining their consciences while Bridgend licks its wounds,” the journalist says.
“In our office, we have all had enough of looking at dead teenagers. One can only hope that everyone else will soon come to feel the same way.”
