Press Gazette relaunches as free weekly magazine

By Press Gazette

This week Press Gazette enters a new exciting chapter in its 47-year history as it relaunches in weekly format.

The weekly digital edition will be made available via email – free – to all registered subscribers.

Anyone wishing to receive the launch edition (out Thursday afternoon) must provide their email and other details by midnight on Wednesday, 30 May.

Press Gazette – Journalism Weekly will cover the best of the week's news in a fresh way and also include many of the columns, features, analysis, practical advice, gossip and insider tips which existing print subscribers know.

This week's launch edition includes an exclusive interview with Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer in which he talks about the public interest considerations being weighed as the UK faces an unprecedented number of journalist criminal prosecutions.

Following the launch of the weekly edition, the print title is to become a quarterly "review" style publication – which is set to run to 100-pages, be perfect bound and aimed at all editors and senior journalists.

Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford said: 'It hardly needs to be said that with British journalism beset by challenges on all sides there has never been a more pressing need for journalists to have their own publication – fighting their corner, sharing best practice and holding the industry to account.

'We've decided to focus all our resources on producing the best rolling news website and weekly digital magazine that we can because all our research suggests that is the way the majority of Press Gazette's readers want to access our content.

'The boom in mobile tablet-style devices and efficiencies brought by modern publishing technology mean Press Gazette can have a new lease of life and can reach tens of thousands of readers without expensive print and distribution costs.

'We still believe there is a strong demand from advertisers and readers for print journalism, which is why we are launching a new quarterly title which will reflect on the bigger issues without overlapping on our digital content."

The new digital edition will be made available in a form optimised to be read on laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablet computers.

And because it is based on standard A4 format it will also be easy to print for those who prefer the paper version.

Press Gazette is also planning a major relaunch of its website on a new publishing system this summer.

Press Gazette is part of the Progressive Media group.
