The UK's newest national newspaper i was the only national daily to increase sales year on year last month.
All the other national daily papers lost sales year on year in January with the quality end of the market seeing the biggest drops.
Meanwhile, among the Sundays the year-on-year figures still show big increases for the Sunday Mirror, People and Star Sunday following the closure of the News of the World last July.
A year ago, i recorded an ABC circulation figure off 133,472 – some 7,770 of which were bulk free copies, making for a net circulation of 125,702. Last month it had a net circulation (minus bulks) of 196,176 – making for year on year sales growth of 47 per cent.
The i launched in October 2010. The headline sales decline of The Independent has been exagerrated by a decision to switch its free bulk distribution to i.
