By Dominic Ponsford

Mail Online hit a new website traffic record for a UK national newspaper website in October as it reached 79 million ‘unique browsers'.

As well as being the most popular UK newspaper website, it was also the fastest growing, according to figures released today by ABC, with the global total of unique browsers rising 58 per cent year on year.

The second placed Guardian attracted 3.3m browsers a day in October (it did not published a monthly figure) compared with Mail Online's total of 4.6m global browsers a day.

Although the Guardian did not publish a monthly total this month it claimed to have reached a total of 60,880,808 unique browsers, which it said was a new record for the site and up 62.5 per cent year on year.

The third placed Telegraph.co.uk reached 2.3m browsers a day and 45.3m browsers a month.

The Independent relaunched its website at the end of October, too late for it have an effect on these figures.
